Geothermal energy without a doubt plays a huge role in Icelandic lifestyles. It powers over 95% of Iceland's capital and provides jobs for thousands; boosting the economy in numerous ways.
Icelandic people have benefited from the lucky geographical location of the Island itself. Iceland sits upon a very volcanically active spot upon the mid-Atlantic ridge. While having the added drawback of active volcanoes this location has the HUGE benefit high geothermal activity. This produces many hot springs and geysers that attract many tourists, but that is not the main attraction. The same geysers and hot springs can be utilized through factories and development buildings that not only boost the economy through jobs, but also provides clean energy which is abundant throughout the country. The energy also saves money through created fossil fuel dependency.
It is apparent that throughout the world countries need an alternative to fossil fuels for energy more than fuel. Geothermal energy is a very good solution from both an economical and environmental standpoint. The fact that production of geothermal energy is both cost efficient (little maintenance) and clean (next to no pollution through production) is a huge incentive for countries to turn to it for an alternative to fossil fuels. This is clearly seen in Iceland. Iceland went through an economic depression and was essentially lifted out of that depression and into wealth through geothermal energy. The production of energy as well as maintenance and pipeline construction generated huge amounts of jobs to people with a wide variety of education and job experience. This also granted Iceland's economy boosted economical strength through fossil fuel independency. Now, Reykjavik (The Capital of Iceland) is almost completely fossil fuel powered and Iceland's economy stronger than ever. Icelandic universities are now teaming up to try and spread their geothermal utilization knowledge to other countries in the hope that those countries will experience the same incredible benefits that Iceland is now so grateful of.
In conclusion it is for those reasons that Iceland is so prosperous in their utilization of Geothermal energy.
