In the earlier times (before 1000) Norse paganism was the main religion in Iceland. But, in 1000, Christianity was adopted. Later, the nation started ti become half Christian and then full Christian. Presently, about 80.7% of the belong to the Lutheran Church(Canada 77.1% are Christians [2001 Survey]). Lutheranism was first carried out by King Christian III of Denmark. The other 19.3% belong to either other Christian churches or believe in other religion such as Islam, Buddhism etc. However, according to a survey conducted in 2011 found that 60% of Icelanders consider religion not important in their daily lives. Sadly, this is one of the highest rates of religion in the world. Statistics say 83% of the population are registered as Lutheran, but another survey states only 11% attend religious services daily and 44% never attend (except for special ones).
In conclusion, it is safe to infer that most Icelanders believe in God, but they are not very religious.
