Holiday Symbols
In Iceland there are many holiday symbols that are seen commonly throughout the country that time of year. Some of these symbols are religious some are simply traditional with little or no religious importance and some represent the countries landscape.
Among the many symbols of the holidays in Iceland these are just some:
Candles, icebergs, auroras, bonfires, mistletoe, glaciers, red bowties (worn by some), the ocean, The virgin Mary holding baby Jesus (in a blanket), Jesus in the manger, Baby Jesus, Baby jesus in a blanket with an aurora in the background, Jólasveinn (“yule man” in English), the yuletide lads (or “Jólasveinarnir” in Icelandic), banners reading “Gleðileg jól” (or happy Yule meaning; Merry Christmas). Those are just some of many traditional Yule symbols.
