Holiday Food:
Iceland as with any culture has people, and people need food. As a result countries and cultures around the world have hundreds, sometimes thousands of different recipes; and Iceland is no exception. There are many different recipes ranging from fresh coastal seafood, to hot scrumptious desserts to chewy smoked meat. It is clear Iceland's cultural and geographical diversity directly translates to diverse culinary creations. This is seen even more during the holiday season.
During the Holidays people are usually in a mood of good cheer and hey, what’s good cheer without GREAT food? During the Yule season desserts are a huge deal! These desserts are usually sweet, but with diversity sometimes comes strangeness and that is sometimes the case in Icelandic desserts. Again, although there are your usual sweet creamy desserts there are also strange foods that ARE considered desserts; these range from sour, to bitter and even to savory! One odd DESSERT in particular are fish cakes.Yes fish cakes, and even though they are traditionally savory appetizers many families practice the tradition of sweet fish cakes!
Although some foods are strange there are those tasty treats along the way that keep us in that holiday mood but as with the fact that treats are treats. Unfortunately, holidays are holidays and don't last all year.
